General Secretary of Janata Dal (S)

Bangalore: S.S. Patil Gugihal, a Janata Dal (Secular) activist and advocate from Basavanabagewadi in Bijapur district, has been appointed State General Secretary of the JD(S) by the President of the State unit of the party, N. Thippanna.

He has been told to strengthen the party in the Bombay Karnataka region. — Special Correspondent

New train services sought for State

Bangalore: The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has written to the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, requesting the introduction of new trains and the taking up of new railway projects in Karnataka.

S. Mohanadass Hegde, Vice-President of the State Youth Congress, had made a representation to the Chief Minister on the development of railways in the State.

Mr. Dharam Singh has suggested to Mr. Prasad the introduction of an inter-city train service between Mangalore and Udupi and trains between Bangalore and Kollur via Udupi, Mangalore and Bellary, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollur, and Kollur and Shimoga, among others.

Three Land Army officials suspended

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Land Army Corporation has suspended three of its officials for violating tender rules.

Corporation sources said J. Chandrashekar, assistant director; Tulasi, first division assistant, Chikodi division; and Bajrad, superintendent of Belgaum division, have been suspended. They had not called for tenders on time and violated the rules of the corporation, the sources said. — Special Correspondent

Scanty rainfall in 58 taluks

BANGALORE: Fifty-eight taluks in the State received scanty rainfall between June 1 and 10, according to a report of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics. Out of the 175 taluks, 46 taluks received excess rainfall and 28 taluks normal rainfall. Rainfall was deficient in 39 taluks and there was no rain in four taluks. The south-west monsoon hit the coastal regions of the State on June 6 and advanced over the south and north interior parts on June 7. Bangalore Urban, Chitradurga, Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Mysore and Belgaum districts received excess rainfall. Rainfall was normal in Davangere, Kolar, Hassan, Bellary, Bagalkot, Bijapur and Dharwad districts. — Special Correspondent

`Janata Dal (U) is intact'

Bangalore: The State Janata Dal (United) has said that the party is intact and the claim that most of its legislators want to cross over to the Janata Dal (Secular) is false.

In a statement here on Tuesday, the JD(U) General Secretary said three of the JD(U) legislators, Nagamani Nage Gowda, H. Anjaneya and Bhimappa Sarikkar, had called on the State President of the party, B. Somashekar and expressed their solidarity.

It is being stated that the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, and the State President of the JD(S), N. Thippanna, are attempting to rope in JD(U) legislators by offering them plum positions. — Special Correspondent

DSS seeks land for Dalit farmers

Bidar: The Dalit Sangharsh Samiti staged a dharna demanding the regularisation of land being cultivated by landless Dalits in the district. Protesters marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office and staged a dharna.

They demanded that all such cultivators be given C forms, land grant committees be rejuvenated in all taluks and excess land of landholders be distributed among the landless. — Staff Correspondent

Classical music concert

MYSORE: Raag Vaibhav, a cultural forum in the city, will present a classical music concert featuring U. Srinivas and U. Rajesh on Sunday. The forum has earlier presented artistes such as Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Rashid Khan, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Mysore M. Nagaraj and R.K. Srikantan.

Seminar on food security

MYSORE: Yuvaraja's College is conducting a two-day seminar on biodiversity for food security on June 24 and 25, according to a release. The seminar will provide a platform for teachers, researchers and students to interact and help them prepare to face growing competition, the release said. Soldier's body arriving

MYSORE: The mortal remains of sepoy N. Sundera of the First Maratha Light Infantry, who died in Surankot in Jammu and Kashmir while fighting militants, will reach Bangalore on June 15 at 12.10 p.m.

It will be brought to Magge village in H.D. Kote taluk for cremation, according to a release. — Special Correspondent.

MLA's birthday celebrations

DAVANGERE: Principal of the Parvathamma Shamanur Shivashankarappa Residential School, S. Mohanty, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the school will celebrate the 75th birthday of Shamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA and educationist, on June 16. She said that the students and staff will visit Annapurneshwari School, meant for underprivileged children, and distribute books to them. The staff and students will clean the slum near the Annapurneshwari school and plant saplings in the city. — Staff Correspondent

Two struck by lightning

HAVERI: Two persons died when they were struck by lightning in Byadgi and Ranebennur taluks of Haveri district on Sunday night according to reports reaching here. In Biranakoppa village of Byadgi taluk, Sharavava (30), who was working in a field died on spot when he was struck by lightning. Three others who were injured are being treated at the district hospital. A case has been registered at the Kaginele police station.

Malatesh Mallappa Magnur (28) who was working in the field at Konanatale village of Ranebennur taluk died and his sister-in-law, Ratnamma, sustained minor injuries when they were struck by lightning, Nagaraj, tahsildar, said. — Staff Correspondent

Man kills sister's fiancé

BIJAPUR: A youth was allegedly stabbed to death by his girlfriend's brother at Balaganur village in Sindagi taluk on Monday. The police gave the name of victim as Kupendra Basanna Rukumpur (18). The accused, Bandenawaj Abdul Jamadar, is missing. — Staff Correspondent

ABVP stages protest

HUBLI: The activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took out a procession here on Tuesday protesting the seat sharing arrangement of the professional courses and the fee structure. The procession, which began at Vidyanagar and concluded at the Tahsildar's office, ended in a meeting at the premises of the tahsildar's office. Ravichandra, District Organising Secretary, ABVP urged that the seat-sharing formula of 50:50 be withdrawn immediately and poor meritorious students be given financial assistance.

Human chain in Shimoga

SHIMOGA: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists staged a demonstration here on Tuesday to protest against the 50:50 seat sharing agreement between the Government and the private professional colleges. They took out a procession and formed a human chain at the A.A. Circle. The activists threatened to intensify their agitation if the seat-sharing agreement is not scrapped. — Special Correspondent

New education policy sought

SHIMOGA: The Kannada Sahitya Parishat members staged a dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding uniform education policy with Kannada being the medium of instruction from 1st to 7th standards. — Special Correspondent

Alternative sites demanded

CHIKMAGALUR: Rekha Huliyappa Gowda, president of the district unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha, has urged the Government to make alternative dwelling arrangements for those living in the vicinity of the Veeranarayana Temple in Belavadi.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, she said the temple was taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1952 and construction of houses within a radius of 100 m. has been banned.
