BANGALORE: The Karnataka Zilla Panchayat Presidents and Vice-Presidents Federation has opposed any move to put off elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats and place them under the control of administrators. They have urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, to allow the existing bodies to function till the elections are held. The presidents and the vice-presidents met here on Monday under the auspices of the Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat to discuss the situation arising out of the order of the Karnataka High Court restraining the State Election Commission from holding elections to the panchayats. The Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat President, C.D. Satyanarayana Gowda, read out a resolution passed by the federation in this regard. Mr. Gowda said officials are making preparations to take over the administration in all the panchayat bodies. That should not be allowed to happen, and the federation will exert pressure on the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister, who, he hoped, are supportive of such a stand. A delegation of the federation will meet both the leaders and present a memorandum, he said. Mr. Gowda said there will be no problem if the High Court decides in favour of holding elections when it takes up the cases with regard to the panchayat elections on June 16.
