CHENNAI: Periamet police on Sunday claimed to have solved the case of murder of a 37-year-old employee of a local leather export firm within 12 hours. They arrested Mudassir Ahmed (22) of Ambur and charged him with the murder.

Police said the victim, Fayaz Ahmed, purchased leather from Mudassir Ahmed sometime ago but had not paid for it. When Fayaz went to the bank on Saturday, Mudassir was also there. He demanded the money from Fayaz, who said the issue could be resolved once his work at the bank was completed.

When Fayaz came out of the bank, Mudassir followed him. They stopped opposite the Nehru Indoor Stadium. An argument followed, and incensed by Mudaseer's behaviour, Fayaz abused him and they fought with each other, police said. Suddenly, Mudassir removed a sabre and attacked Fayaz, injuring his hand and neck. He then fled the scene, going to a relative's house in Vyasarpadi.

Police formed four special parties to nab the offender, and interrogated the owner of Fayaz's leather firm. One of the special teams traced Mudassir's hideout and arrested him around midnight on Saturday. Mudassir was produced before the XIV Metropolitan Magistrate, who remanded him to custody.

TASMAC employee held

The prohibition enforcement police of Guindy on Saturday night arrested four people, including an employee of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation, on charges of trying to smuggle into the city IFML bottles from Pondicherry.

A police release said a team led by Inspector J. John of the enforcement wing was conducting vehicular checks when they stopped a two-wheeler at Kathipara junction. The pillion rider was found carrying 10 bottles of liquor manufactured in Pondicherry. On interrogation, the police zeroed in on an address on Pallavan First Street, Medavakkam, near here, and arrested four persons, including an employee of TASMAC, who were allegedly running a fake IMFL manufacturing unit.

The police seized more liquor, a machine for sealing liquor bottles, 200 empty bottles, besides 4,000 bottles carrying fake labels in the name of well-known brands.

The arrested were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
