Career guidance meet in Avadi

CHENNAI: St. Peter's Engineering College, Avadi on Sunday conducted a seminar on "Career Guidance and Counselling for Engineering Aspirants."

The seminar was aimed at clearing the confusion in the minds of students following the State Government's move to scrap the CET for admission into professional courses and was attended by 1500 students from 78 institutions, said G. Ponnusamy, Dean, St. Peter's Engineering College.

Awareness needed

Inaugurating the event, M.S. Palanichamy, Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Open University, explained the need for parents to be aware of the courses, career opportunities and and the parameters to be kept in mind in deciding the college where a chosen course may be pursued.

Parents must keep the interests and aptitude of their children in mind while guiding their decisions, he added.

The Editor of Dinamani, M. Chandrasekar said students should use the time between counselling and admissions to work on their English language skills.

Other speakers at the seminar included P. Mannar Jawahar, Director of Centre for University-Industry Collaboration, Anna University, P.V. Navaneetha Krishnan, former Director for Admissions in Anna University, Crisilda Rengasamy, a Research Consultant and Pari Parameswaran, Head of the Department of Youth Welfare, Madurai Kamarajar University and M. S. Arulmani, International Jaycees Trainer.

The sessions were followed by an interactive session where students and parents had their doubts cleared by the experts.

St. Peter's Engineering College will also be conducting a two-week orientation programme on July 18 for students joining courses in Engineering.

It would focus on mathematics, spoken English, development of communication skills and personality , Dr. Ponnusamy said.
