Pattabiram residents left with `dead' phones

Underground cables damaged by road development work "There is little coordination between the Highways department and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited whenever road and flyover projects are undertaken in the area."

CHENNAI: Service to about 1,000 landlines of Chennai Telephones in Pattabiram and Thiruninravur have been affected, allegedly as a result of damage to underground cables by road development work in the area.

Residents said their telephones were not functioning for the last six days and blamed the disruption on the road widening taking place on National Highway-205. Such disruptions have become a regular feature in the area, said T. Sadagopan, coordinator of Thandurai Pattabiram Consumer Council.

There is little coordination between the highways department and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited whenever road and flyover projects, such as the one that paralysed service to about 1,500 lines in Thiruninravur for about ten days, are undertaken in the area, he said. While the BSNL reimburses the highways for digging trenches to lay cables, the latter takes up the road work apparently without informing the telecom service provider.

About 1,000 lines in Cholan Nagar, Nehru Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Babu Nagar in Pattabiram and Prakash Nagar and Balaji Nagar in Thiruninravur residential areas as well as service to hospitals, PCOs and commercial establishments have been affected.

`Compensate subscribers'

BSNL should insist on the highways paying up for the disruption and also compensate subscribers, he said. It should shift the lines working in Pattabiram to the new exchange in the area from Thiruninravur. "Subscribers, whose lines are parented to the Thiruninravur exchange, are forced to travel up to four km to lodge complaints during such disruptions." The BSNL should also stop charging for calls made from its own mobile network to the landline fault registration numbers, he added.
