Trucks stranded

Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL: A few thousands of trucks laden with essential commodities are stranded at Assam's Golaghat bordering Nagaland and at Khuzuma adjacent to Manipur. This follows an economic blockade by tribal students demanding a rollback of the declaration of a State holiday on June 18 by the Manipur Government. All sections of Naga tribals in Manipur had taken strong exception to the declaration of the holiday saying that it was a stumbling block to the Naga unification move.

(The State Government declared the holiday in memory of the 18 persons who were killed in 2001 during the agitation against the extension of the ceasefire between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M).)
