Rail fare hike under consideration

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Ministry of Railways is thinking of hiking passenger fares in the wake of the rise in fuel prices, said Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu here on Saturday.

``The fuel hike will cost the Ministry an extra Rs. 325 crores over the next nine months,'' Mr. Velu, who was here to inspect the facilities, told reporters.

The Minister also announced two new broad-gauge line projects — Rs.30-crore-line in the Nagapattinam-Velankanni sector and another between Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal via Tirunallaru.
