HYDERABAD: The issue relating to the Pranahita project took a new turn on Thursday with three Ministers belonging to Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) protesting against the attempt by some officials to harm the interests of Telangana. The TRS Ministers -- T. Harish Rao, G. Vijayarama Rao and A. Chandrasekhar -- met the Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah, asking him to come to the rescue of Telangana by confirming that 160 tmcft of water would be utilised by the project. A team from the Institution of Engineers, led by G. Prabhakar, said a survey, had established that 160 tmcft of water would be available and pleaded against restricting the quantity to 63 tmcft. Mr. Lakshmaiah assured them that 160 tmcft was available for the project, which would bring waters up to Chevella in Ranga Reddy district and to Hyderabad for drinking purpose by a transfer through Yellampalli project on the Godavari. The Principal Secretary, Irrigation, C.V.S.K. Sarma, told The Hindu that a new order was being issued to dispel doubts of the Telangana leaders. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, reportedly expressed displeasure over the "mess" at a meeting with officials. The Telangana leaders alleged that Irrigation officials had issued the order with a view to scuttling the project and favouring the interests of coastal Andhra.
