Four-day consumer products exhibition from August 12

Best of Chennai Expo 2005 will have 129 pavilions

CHENNAI: The Federation of Madras Merchants and Manufacturers' Association (FMMMA) will organise a four-day exhibition of consumer products here starting on August 12 to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

"The Best of Chennai Expo 2005' will have 129 pavilions at the Rani Meyyammai and Raja Muthiah Hall.

The event aims to bring affiliate members closer together and could become an annual fixture from 2006, FMMMA president, J. Sumermal told a press conference on Monday.

Permanent office

The FMMMA has acquired a permanent office at Rattan Baazar to provide better services to around 60,000 traders affiliated to 60 member organisations in connection with its anniversary.

The Association, which oversees the welfare of member trade outfits, has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to scrap the 1 per cent resale tax as the position of the State coffers had improved.

The tax had been imposed to bolster the State coffers and one of the assurances given by Government at that time was that it would be withdrawn when the situation improved, the Association said.

Value added tax

Commending the Government for deferring the VAT regime, FMMMA members wanted the new unified tax structure to be confined to the manufacturers in the first phase of introduction.

VAT should be extended to the trading community only after its benefits are well established, they said.

Shanthilal Pandya feared that the effects of VAT could be adverse in Tamil Nadu where the single point of taxation had been highly successful for the past 32 years or so.
