THE prevention of kidney diseases is a two tier programme, viz. primary prevention. The primary prevention involves strategies to prevent the occurrence of kidney disease altogether and secondary prevention involves effort to decrease the rate of progression of kidney disease to end stage kidney disease and prevent other complications arising out of poorly functioning kidneys. Diabetes and hypertension are responsible for half of the population of patients with kidney failure. it is very clear from research that strict control of blood sugars, blood pressure and abnormal lipid profile are instrumental in preventing the kidney disease. As soon as the diabetes id detected, a consultation with diabetologist goes a long way to control of blood sugars. These patients need control of hyperlipidemia, change in life-style including cessation of smoking, healthy diet and regular exercise. They also need at least yearly check up for identification disease in kidneys, heart, eyes, blood vessels and nerves, which means investigations and visits to concerned specialists. Hypertension is the area where much can be done to prevent kidney diseases. Secondary prevention of kidney diseases is very scarcely known to medical fraternity than nephrologist. It involves to initiate the treatment to protect the remaining function of the kidney as long as possible, to counsel the patient regarding the nature of the disease to avoid various neuropsychiatric illness common in these patients, to prevent various other complications related to poorly functioning kidneys. <167,9p,1>- Dr. Rajesh Sherke, Consultant Nephrologist, Image Hospitals
