HYDERABAD: There is something irresistible about the old world charm of heritage buildings and precincts. That some more buildings have been notified as heritage structures should indeed gladden the hearts of heritage lovers. The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA), which had listed 137 buildings in the city for their unique and excellent architectural style or for their aesthetics, historical, cultural, or sociological significance, notified 19 more buildings recently. Prominent among these are 160-year-old St. George's Grammar School Complex, Old Jail Complex, Monda Market Road, Wesley Church Complex, Opp. Clock Tower, Nampally Sarai, Nampally, Bhoiguda Kaman, Mangalhaat, IAS Officers Association, Greenlands etc. Says a HUDA official: "The purpose of notifying such precincts or buildings is to retain their architectural, historical and social value. Many of such notified buildings are private properties and maintained and used for various purposes, religious, educational, commercial, entertainment. Once in the list of heritage structures, they get protection from indiscriminate and premature destruction."
Role of panel
The heritage committee, constituted under HUDA Zoning Regulations 1981 discharges its role in convincing and impressing upon the owners not to destroy the listed heritage structures lured by the commercial potential of their properties. "It is these structures that give an unique identity and lend character to a region and add to its heritage, beauty and tourist value," he said.
