Police charged with torturing goldsmith

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: A goldsmith, Shiva Kumar Chary, 49, was allegedly tortured by the Golconda police in connection with a theft case.

The alleged incident came to light on Thursday when Chary's wife, Kalavathi, and daughter, Sree Devi, complained at the Hyderabad Police Commissioner's office about alleged harassment by the Golconda Detective Sub-Inspector, Shankar Yadav.

Chary, who has become a physical wreck, fainted on the commissionerate premises while waiting with his daughter and wife to meet higher-ups. The West Zone DCP, N. Sanjay, conceded Chary was brought for questioning. "I have to find out where things went wrong. Action will be taken against erring officers," he said. Chary has been shifted to the Osmania Hospital.
