HYDERABAD: The 93rd Indian Science Congress (ISC), to be held here between January 3 and 7, 2006, will focus on applying science and technology for integrated rural development. While the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate the Congress in which over 5,000 scientists from across the country and abroad will attend, the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will attend the congress on the third day. Apart from big names in the science and technology world, four Nobel laureates - economist Amartya Sen, geneticist Hargobind Khurana, wheat scientist Norman Borlaug and Richard R. Ernst (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) will take part. During the five-day long deliberations, there will be numerous discussions and presentation of papers on 14 sections spanning every aspect of life - urban and rural, the General President of the Indian Science Congress (ISC), I.V. Subba Rao, stated at a press conference here on Thursday. Dr. Kalam will attend a session on Provision of urban amenities in rural areas, and the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Kapil Sibal, on Science and disaster management. The Minister for External Affairs, K. Natwar Singh, will be chief guest at a session on Science and integrated rural development in the SAARC region.
Special session
A special session will be held on the Centenary of agricultural education in the sub-continent with the participation of M.S. Swaminathan, Chairman, National Commission on Farmers. A section on Science and United Nations millennium development goals will be attended by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, National Advisory Council. The Vice-Chancellor of the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, S. Raghu Vardhan Reddy, said the programme committee formed for the conduct of the congress would be headed by Dr. Swaminathan himself and the administrative committee led by the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda.
