Tiruvannamalai: Centre's statement published in gazette

Staff Reporter

Permission to withdraw ASI notification

VELLORE: The Central Government has published in the Gazette its statement in the Supreme Court seeking the latter's permission to withdraw the September 20, 2002 notification issued by the Archaeological Survey of India, of its intention to declare the Sri Arunachaleswara Temple, Tiruvannamalai as a monument of national importance, according to a statement issued by Gingee N.Ramachandran, Vandavasi MP and Deputy General Secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Mr.Ramachandran said that he met the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh on May 27 and requested him to gazette the statement made by the Central Government in the Supreme Court on the withdrawal of the ASI notification. He also requested the Prime Minister, the Union Minister for Culture, Jaipal Reddy, Secretary, Department of Culture, Government of India, Reena Ranjan and the Central Government counsel, Dutta to withdraw the central government's tourism plan on the development and maintenance of Tiruvannamalai as a tourist centre. Acting on the decision taken by Dr.Manmohan Singh and Mr.Jaipal Reddy, accepting his earlier request, Mr.Dutta did not press for the implementation of the Centre's tourism plan in the Supreme Court and also did not object to the scheme proposed by the Tiruvannamalai municipality. The Vandavasi MP said that the above decisions of the Central Government pave the way for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Tamil Nadu Government to administer the temple without disturbing the houses and buildings.
