CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday described as "delaying and diversionary tactics" the Union Government's move to constitute a Group of Ministers to study the order of the Supreme Court quashing the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act. Expressing shock over the Centre's decision, M. Venkaiah Naidu, party vice-president, told journalists that instead of welcoming the judicial verdict and proceeding to tackle the mammoth problem of illegal infiltration in the country, especially Assam, the Centre had decided to form the GOM. "This has been done to buy time till the Assembly elections are over in Assam, and to pursue the vote-bank politics and reap benefits out of them." Emphasising that the issue concerned the security of the nation, Mr. Naidu demanded that the Centre convene an all-party meeting immediately to discuss the situation arising out of the court order. While the "spontaneous celebration" across Assam over the court decision only reflected the "anguish" of the common man over the "increase in infiltration," the Congress seemed to be converting the larger internal security issue into a "minority protection issue." Condemning such an approach, the BJP vice-president said "if this is not tackled seriously, it may lead to the demand for another partition." At the national executive to be held here during July 21-23, the BJP would, among other things, deliberate on the issue.
