NEW DELHI: : The Supreme Court on Friday rejected at the admission stage a special leave petition filed by the AIADMK Member of Parliament, P.G. Narayanan, to restrain the Centre from granting the Direct to Home (DTH) licence to Sun Television Network. A Bench, consisting of Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice G.P. Mathur, told senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the petitioners, that "it is a petition filed in the personal and political interest." When counsel said that it was done only in the public interest, the judges said these petitions should not be entertained and should be dismissed with costs. However, the Bench, while dismissing the petition, did not impose any costs. The petitioner submitted that the Union Government was adopting an "arbitrary procedure" in granting the licence to the Sun network and as an MP, he had the locus standi to file the public interest petition. The Madras High Court in an order on May 30 had dismissed the petition. Hence the SLP in the Supreme Court.
