12.94 lakh applications rejected

Special Correspondent

Poll rolls in 193 constituencies will be published on August 31, says Naresh Gupta

CHENNAI: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta on Thursday said 12.94 lakh out of the 19.40 lakh applications filed for inclusion of names in electoral rolls in 193 Assembly constituencies covered by the summary revision had been rejected.

He told reporters here that the applications had been processed by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and the final rolls would be published on August 31.

Mr. Gupta said the applications were rejected on various grounds. As many as 4.56 lakh forms were rejected owing to "non-residence or not furnishing proof of residence," 3.72 lakh forms could not be accepted due to signature variations and 3.27 lakhs on grounds of under age or failure to furnish proof of age.

As many as 72,000 applications were summarily rejected as they did not bear signature or address, or the claimants were under age. In 49,000 cases, the names were there in the rolls.

In cases where applications had been rejected due to variation in signature but the claims were genuine, such persons could apply in the next revision of rolls from January 1, 2006, Mr. Gupta said.

A problem encountered during the revision was multiple entries by applicants who had shifted their residence but had not furnished their previous address. All such cases had been identified and action initiated to delete the names from the earlier addresses, he said.

A total of 71,176 applications were received for inclusion in the rolls for 39 Assembly segments, including 34 constituencies in the municipal corporation limits, covered by intensive revision from August 1 to 16. A total of 951 applications were received online, including 429 in Chennai. Apart from this, 3,093 forms for deletion of names were received. The final rolls for these constituencies would be published on September 15, Mr. Gupta said.

As the electors had not produced their Photo Identity Cards during the intensive revision, their numbers could not be incorporated in the draft rolls.
