Award for kin of Tinsukia firing victims

Payment of Rs. 1 lakh each ordered at NHRC instance

NEW DELHI: On the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission, the Assam Government has ordered payment of an interim compensation of Rs. 1 lakh each to the kin of three persons who died in police firing in Tinsukia district on November 3, 2002.

Inquiry blames police

A magisterial inquiry blamed the incident in front of the Langkashi police outpost on lack of command and control, and irresponsible behaviour of a sub-inspector.

Based on the inquiry findings, the NHRC issued notice to the Director-General of Police and the Home Secretary, asking them to show cause why an interim relief of Rs. 1 lakh each should not be paid to the kin of the victims.

While the police informed the NHRC of the status of the departmental proceedingsagainst the SI in charge of the Langkhasi station, the Government did not respond to the show-cause.

The NHRC ordered the Government to comply with its recommendation on payment of interim relief.

The Tinsukia Inspector-General informed it that departmental action was taken against the SI and that the kin of the deceased were paid Rs. 1 lakh each as interim relief.
