THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : The Veli tourist village is to be given a facelift at an estimated cost of Rs.94 lakhs as part of the efforts of Kerala Tourism to attract foreign tourists to the landscaped picnic spot. The existing dilapidated boat house, which houses the restaurant of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation and ticket counter for boat services, would be renovated, at a cost of Rs. 23.85 lakhs. To be built in Kerala architecture, the ground floor of the renovated building will house the office, shops, tourist information centre, ticket counter, bookshop and kitchen. The open restaurant will be on the first floor facing the Veli lake. The pathways in the landscaped garden are to be reconstructed at a cost of Rs.23 lakhs using granite and tiles. They are to be linked together so that the visitors arriving at the village can walk from one end to another Lighting. The lawns are to be refurbished at a cost of Rs.6 lakhs. The green cover in the village is to be improved. High mast and soft lights would be installed as the authorities want to throw open the village till 9 p.m. The lighting is being taken up at a cost of Rs.27 lakhs. Already, fibreglass dustbins in the shape of Chinese urns had been introduced in the village to ensure that the place is tidy. Compost pits are also to be constructed. Overhead tanks and automatic sprinkler system are to be set up in the village at a cost of Rs.7 lakhs. The landscape improvement project has been designed by Vastushilpalaya consultancy.
