Civets die of bird flu

HANOI: Three civets in Vietnam's Cuc PhuongNational Park have died of bird flu, an official of the park told Xinhua on Friday. ``The civets were born in captivity. They died in late June. Their samples have recently been tested positive to bird flu,'' the official said. Reasons for their infection are under investigation, the official said, noting that other animals and people working in the park in the northern province of Ninh Binh are healthy. Since the first bird flu patient was detected in Vietnam in late 2003, up to 91 human cases of infections, including 41 fatalities, have been reported in 31 cities and provinces. Vietnam is conducting vaccination for fowls, mainly chickens and ducks, in 47 cities and provinces. The fund for vaccinating over 200 million fowls is estimated at $44.3 million. — Xinhua
