Acharya's petition posted for hearing on September 5
Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Supreme Court has posted for hearing on September 5, a petition filed by the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, for transfer of the Sankararaman murder case against him and others for trial in a court outside Tamil Nadu.
The court, on May 6, had issued notice to the Tamil Nadu Government, Chief of the Special Investigation Team, Premkumar, approver Ravi Subramaniam and the other accused seeking their response.
On Tuesday, counsel for the State submitted before a Bench comprising Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti, Justice G. P. Mathur and Justice P.K. Balasubramanyan that the case listed for September 5 should be adjourned by two weeks since the counter had not been filed. But, this was opposed by counsel for the Acharya, Krishna Kumar, who said that more than four months had passed and adjournment was being sought knowing that the trial court had posted the matter for framing of charges on September 5.
But the Bench said the matter would be listed for September 5. It asked counsel for the State to circulate a letter seeking adjournment and allowed Mr. Krishna Kumar to oppose the plea.
