Nalini returns fee to IT Department
CHENNAI:
Following the controversy over her taking up a case for the Income Tax Department, Nalini Chidambaram, lawyer and wife of Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, on Tuesday returned the appearance fee of Rs. 1 lakh.
Sources said Ms. Chidambaram had returned the fee to the department four or five days back.
On August 26, Ms. Chidambaram issued a statement here saying her husband had no knowledge of her taking up the case. She took up the case only after senior standing counsel of the department, Pushya Sitaraman, persuaded her to accept it.
Since her husband became Finance Minister in 1996, she had voluntarily refrained from appearing for or against the IT Department, she said, adding that "this is the sole case in which the department had engaged me." PTI
