COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Government on Thursday rejected a call by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that the proposed talks to review the ceasefire agreement be held in rebel-held Kilinochchi in northern Sri Lanka. "The Government has declined the LTTE's offer", Cabinet spokesperson Nimal Siripala de Silva told a press conference here. Mr. De Silva also said an LTTE demand to hold talks at an overseas venue was also not acceptable. The Tigers had rejected a Government proposal to hold talks at Omantai in the northern no-man's land and suggested Kilinochchi as a venue.
The initial call for a meeting between Government and rebel representatives was renewed by a letter from President Chandrika Kumaratunga to Norwegian Premier Kjell Magne Bondevik after August 12. The LTTE accepted the call and suggested Oslo as a possible venue for the talks. The Government rejected Oslo and suggested Omantai in the northern no-man's land as venue.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka ruled that the Sri Lankan presidential election should be held this year, raising some uncertainty on the talks. On the LTTE position that it would not hold talks before the elections, Mr. De Silva said: "There is no communication to us that there will be no talks till the elections." The Government had not yet zeroed in on its team for the talks.
