This Day That Age
Congress leaders, now assembled in New Delhi for a series of meetings and important consultations on organisational matters, hold the view that the next general elections could be held on the expiry of the normal life of Parliament in the first quarter of 1957. Although there has been speculation that implementation of the recommendations of the States Reorganisation Commission may necessitate the postponement of the elections by at least a year, the Congress leaders are of the opinion that the Commission's recommendations should be accepted by the country without question and implemented without any delay. Prime Minister Nehru has addressed the State Chief Ministers, suggesting that the Commission's recommendations should be unanimously accepted and implemented as expeditiously as possible. Postponement of the elections would necessitate amendment of the Constitution and declaration of an emergency. Congress leaders do not think that the redistribution of States should be regarded as an emergency. Moreover they also feel that frequent amendment of the Constitution would lower its sanctity.
