Private busmen have for long been taking commuters for granted. Flash strikes at the crack of a whip, rash driving resulting in fatal accidents, causing traffic hold-ups at junctions by parking on the middle of the road... the list of complaints is endless. The police and personnel of the Motor Vehicles' Department were ineffective in tackling them. As far as commuters were concerned, it was difficult for them to take on the organised might of bus operators. It is at this juncture that Janapaksham, an NGO, stepped in. It has devised a novel `modus operandi' to send across the message that commuters cannot be taken for granted. "Our volunteers and children of the Seventh Day Adventist School, Kaloor, have started pasting posters at bus stops, exhorting people to boycott buses whose registration numbers end in odd numbers, on Monday. On Tuesday, buses with registration numbers ending in even numbers will be boycotted," says Benny Joseph, State convener of Janapaksham. Call 98475 33322 (Benny) or 98460 43459 (Shine) to participate in the protest.
