NAGAPATTINAM: Permanent houses are being built exclusively for Adi Dravidar and Scheduled Tribe community people affected in the tsunami-hit areas in the district, said the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, here on Thursday. The Collector said that 1,221 permanent houses would be provided to the SC and ST community people in Kesavanpalayam in Sirkazhi taluk, Vanagiri near Poompuhar and Kavaratheru near Nagapattinam and construction work would commence soon. Mr. Radhakrishnan pointed out that nearly 12,000 persons belonging to SC and ST were provided relief and also utensils in the affected areas and said that the families of 55 Adi Dravidar persons, who died in the tsunami, were provided a compensation of Rs.one lakh each. The Collector pointed out that the Agriculture department had provided relief assistance to 776 Adi Dravidars whose lands to the extent of 451 hectares were affected by seawaters. Besides, the Horticulture department gave assistance to 156 Adi Dravidars.
