VIJAYAWADA: She never knew that success would come to her on a platter, thanks to the diffident dames around her who chickened out of the contest minutes before its commencement.

Girls in the city seem to need some more time and encouragement before they come out of their shells. This was evident at the Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) inter-collegiate swimming (men's & women's) competition, held here on Wednesday.

Sixty boys take part

Organised at Sir Vizzy swimming pool in Gymkhana grounds at Gandhinagar, by the management of Satavahana College, the event saw participation of some 60 boys drawn from 14 different colleges affiliated to the ANU. In the women's category, dame luck smiled on P. Padma of Syed Appala Swamy College who won `hands down' for the simple reason that she had no competitors.

A lone `contestant' in the 100 metres and 200 metres freestyle, Padma was rewarded for her participation in the event. "Participation of girls in the annual swimming competitions has never been encouraging.

Even in past, not more than six to seven of them participated.

This year was the worst. The couple of others who were willing to participate initially, also backed out later," said B.Ch. Sangeetha Rao, organising secretary of Satavahana College.

N. Uday Kumar of Siddhartha Pharmacy College lifted the overall championship cup for 2005-06. Vijayawada East MLA V. Radhakrishna inaugurated the contest, while college principal V. Sambi Reddy, presided.
