SALEM: The Aided College Teachers' Association-Tamil Nadu has urged the Governor and Chancellor of the University to conduct an inquiry into the functioning and affairs of Periyar University here with regard to its appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff. A press release from the association said that it had learnt of "flagrant violations of norms, wastage of public money and lack of accountability" in appointments in the university. The association claimed that it would affect the growth of the institution and perpetuate individual power structure The very purpose of starting this university, to serve the students from socially, economically and educationally backward districts of Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Namakkal, would be defeated, it said.
`Hire and fire'
It claimed that the filling of non-teaching posts was being done on ad hoc basis and the policy of "hire and fire'' was being pursued as per the whims and fancies of the administrators. Majority of the non-teaching staff, particularly those on the clerical cadres, were being treated as bonded labourers with no proper attendance registers and wages for weekends, it charged. It alleged that many of the important issues did not go through a formal process in which decision-making bodies such as Syndicate or its sub committees should play a decisive role. Hence the association's General Secretary A. Raja urged the Governor and Chancellor to conduct an inquiry.
