TIRUCHI: The price of crude oil might be hitting new highs time and again in the international market. But, motorists in Tiruchi find conserving fuel a daunting task. Not that they are unwilling to make the effort, in fact they would grab any opportunity coming their way to save drops of the liquid gold (read petrol). But unfortunately, they are not able to do so. The reason being that timers attached to many a signal at traffic junctions do not function right. At traffic signals, where the waiting time varies between 30 and 90 seconds, most of the motorists switch off their ignitions and restart when there is a few seconds left for the signal to turn. But now, though they have to wait for the same duration, the absence of timers attached to the signals has denied them the option of switching off their vehicle ignitions, for, they are uncertain when the green signal would flash. If one does risk cutting the ignition, any delay in restarting the vehicle after the green light flashes would lead to dealing with heaps of abuse and curses from fellow motorists in a hurry. Allowing their vehicles to run idle till the signal changes, these fuel conservationists can only fret and fume in unison amid the suffocating smoke billowing from the umpteen exhaust pipes.
