State CRZ committee reconstituted

KOCHI: The State Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) committee has been reconstituted by the Union Ministry for Forest and Environment.

The members of the new committee are N.R. Menon, Director, Centre For Integrated Management of Coastal Zones of Cochin University and Science and Technology (CUSAT); B. Madhusoodana Kurup, Professor, School of Industrial Fisheries, CUSAT; John Kurian, Professor, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram; Secretary, South Indian Federation of Fisheries Societies, Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram; M. Baba, secretary, Centre for Earth Science Studies, Thiruvananthapuram; Chairman, Kerala State Pollution Control Board and Secretaries of the Departments of Local Self-Government (Rural and Urban), Industries and Fisheries and Port.

The Principal Secretary of the Science, Technology and Environment will be the chairman of the committee and K.R.S. Krishnan, Director and Additional Secretary of Science, Technology and Environment will be the member secretary of the committee.

The quorum of the committee has been fixed as two-third of the total strength of the committee. Incidentally, the State authorities had forwarded a proposal to the Union Ministry for reducing the quorum to half of the strength of the committee.

Though the request has not been taken into account, a provision has been incorporated for the Government Secretaries to send nominees to the meeting, the department officials said.

The first meeting of the committee will be held on September 22.
