DAVANGERE: N.G. Puttaswamy, former president of the Davangere Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) and president of the district unit of the Samajwadi Party, was defeated by Congress candidate H.K. Virupakshappa in the APMC elections in Anegod constituency. Counting of votes in 12 constituencies of Davangere APMC and two in Jagalur APMC was held on Tuesday. Mudegowdru Girish of the Congress from Davangere, H.K. Virupakshappa of the Congress from Anegod constituency, B.M. Sathish of the Janata Dal (Secular) from Hadadi constituency, B. Nagehswara Rao of the Janata Dal (S) from Belavanur constituency, H.G. Ganeshappa of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Doddabathi, Pushpa Prabhu of the Congress from Bethur reserved constituency (women), K.P. Mallikarjuna of the Congress from Bada, K.H. Thippanna of the Congress from Iguru, A.E. Nagaraj of the BJP from Anaji, R. Nagaraj of the Congress from Mayakonda, Jeevan Prakash of the BJP from Lokikere, and G. Vedamurthy of the Congress from Merchants constituency were elected to the Davangere APMC. N.K. Revanna Gowda of the BJP from Bidarakere and A. Venkatesh of the Congress from Devikere were elected to the Jagalur APMC. The other nine members were elected unopposed. Tension prevailed at the counting hall following a clash between Mr. Puttaswamy and Mr. Virupakshappa. However, police intervened and brought the situation under control.
