HAVERI: Manjunath Kunnur, Bharatiya Janata Party MP for Dharwad South, has urged the Union Government to grant relief to the people affected by floods in north Karnataka. He demanded that the relief be on the lines of the relief measures adopted for those affected by the tsunami in Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Mr. Kunnur told this correspondent from New Delhi that he had urged the Union Government to give the State a special relief package. Standing crops on over four lakh hectares were lost, more than 90,000 houses were damaged, and around 130 persons lost their lives owing to the floods in the State. In Haveri district, the MP said cotton, groundnut and maize crops on 23,000 hectares was lost. He urged the Union and State governments to release compensation commensurate with the damage to the affected farmers. He said he has also pressed for the waiver of interest on cooperative loans taken by farmers in affected regions and rescheduling of short-term loans.
