CHITRADURGA: The AHIND Okkuta will hold a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here to urge the Union and State governments to protect the interest of poor and meritorious students who want to take up professional courses. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, K. Bhakta Rame Gowda, a district leader of the Alpasankhyataru Hindulidavaru mathu Dalitaru (AHIND) movement demanded an amendment to the Constitution to provide equal opportunity to the oppressed and economically backward classes. He said that the Supreme Court's judgement with regard to admissions to private professional colleges will make higher education accessible only to the upper classes and the majority will be deprived the opportunity to pursue professional courses. He said that all leaders of the AHIND movement in the district will participate in the dharna. M.D. Ravi, former taluk panchayat member of Hiriyur taluk, was elected president of the district unit of the AHIND Okkuta at a meeting held here on Wednesday evening. K. Mukudappa, president of AHIND State Federation, demanded that the reservation provided for backward classes in local bodies be extended to the Legislature and Parliament as well. Bhaktha Rame Gowda criticised the Janata Dal's (Secular) decision to convene a rally of party workers in the first week of September in Chitradurga. He said the rally aims at misleading the Nayaka community. He said that vested interests are trying to create a rift in the community. Office bearers of the district units of the organisation were elected on Wednesday.
