PSGR Krishnammal College for Women will offer two new courses this year

COIMBATORE: A training centre to provide women with job-oriented skills will be established by the GRG Trust as part of the 81st birth anniversary celebrations of the late educationist Chandrakanthi Govindarajulu and to mark the Golden Jubilee of GRG Institutions on September 5.

The secretary, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, R. Nandini, told presspersons here on Thursday that the centre would enable students from economically weak families to benefit from an `Earn-while-you-learn' scheme.

The training would be free for the underprivileged and admission would be based on certain criteria. "We are going to do a market study to find out the business requirements of the region and only then offer training. There are likely to be courses in food processing, garment design, tailoring, preparation of bakery products, upholstery trade, embroidery and beauty care," she added.

These programmes would be aimed at turning women into entrepreneurs and helping talented alumni to form self-help groups. In addition, the centre would offer consultancy services and career guidance.

Location not decided

She said that the centre would come up on a one-acre plot of land and would be constructed in traditional Dravidian and modern architectural styles. The exact location of the centre would be decided soon.

A statue of Chandrakanthi Govindarajulu would be unveiled and her biography released during the function, at which the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, would be the chief guest.

Ms. Nandini said that the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women would offer two new courses this year - M.Sc. Microbial Biotechnology and M.Sc. Organic Chemistry. The college had recently established a Centre for Women's Studies, with sponsorship from the University Grants Commission.
