COIMBATORE: : The City Police on Thursday seized 93,990 raffle tickets valued at Rs. 23,58,000 being taken to Kerala from Bangalore. Kamaludeen (39) of Walayar and Ramasamy (32) of Thudialur have been arrested. On a tip off, a police team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, A. S. Nandakumar, and the Inspector of Police, Variety Hall Road Police Station, P. Muthuraj, started vehicle checks at a number of places. When a maxi-cab was intercepted on Goods Shed Road, the driver tried to flee arousing suspicion. The police succeeded in stopping the vehicle. Tickets popular in Kerala and Karnataka were found in the vehicle. The consignment belonged to Rahim, a resident of Ayyampalayam, near Madurai, who is currently into lottery business in Kerala and Bangalore. A couple of days back, the police had conducted a raid on a godown in Gandhipuram and seized a huge quantity of tickets. The police have registered a case under the provisions of sec 294 A of the Indian Penal Code (which calls for action against any person found in possession, or involved in transportation or sale of any banned commodity or item). Provisions of sections 5 and 7 of the Lottery Regulation Act of 1998 have also been invoked against the accused. The cases registered now are cognisable and non-bailable. The City Police Commissioner, Karan Singha, has already issued a circular asking police officers to exercise extra effort to prevent the sale of lottery tickets and video piracy. On Monday the police had seized nearly 1,000 VCDs, including pornographic films and pirated versions, from a video library in the Thyagi Kumaran Market area. A computer, CD writer and other gadgets were seized. The video library owner and his brother have been taken to custody.
