Somnath assails ethnic discrimination

NEW DELHI:
Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has said ethnic discrimination has no place in any modern society. He said for democracy to flourish, every section of society has to rise above such bias.
Mr. Chatterjee was speaking at a dinner hosted by the former Fiji Prime Minister, Mahendra Chowdhry, in honour of the Indian Parliamentary delegation, which is in Nadi, Fiji, in connection with the ongoing conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
Extending a warm welcome to the delegation led by Mr. Chatterjee, Mr. Chowdhry gave a brief account of the role of persons of Indian origin in building Fiji. Stating that ethnicity is a major problem in Fiji, he sought the support of all democratic forces in what he described as the struggle for the rights of Fijians of Indian origin, a Lok Sabha secretariat release said.
