BJP to launch stir against price hike

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party said on Tuesday that it would launch a nation-wide agitation against the "unreasonable" hike in the prices of petrol and diesel. It would hold demonstrations in all State capitals and district headquarters on Wednesday and Thursday.

Talking to newspersons here, BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said the hike was the fifth in the past 15 months. "Anyone who understands oil economy will know that whenever the oil prices rise in the international market, the Government is expected to cut its share of profits and revenue earnings to reduce the burden on the common people, but this has not been done."

"The Government which came to power on the slogan of helping the `common man' (aam aadmi) is putting the entire burden on the people. It is a conspiracy of the Government against the `common man.' It will hit the common man," Mr. Jaitley said.

The party will shortly announce the further course of action on the issue. Processions, sit-ins and burning of effigies will form part of the agitation.
