Gentlemen-scientists

This refers to the report "A gentleman-judge speaks out" (Sept. 13). I have personal knowledge of the lifestyle of many renowned nuclear scientists in the Department of Atomic Energy, Kalpakkam.

A director, specialist in fast breeder technology, used to move around on an old cycle. Once it was lost and he lodged a complaint. A security policeman commented jocularly that no one would be able to ride the cycle and that the thief would leave it somewhere. Indeed, it was found discarded on the roadside.

Another director struggled very hard to repay the loan he had taken for purchasing a modest flat. Though there were many lucrative offers from foreign countries, these scientists preferred to serve in India accepting the ground realities.

V.R. Sundaram,
Chennai
