Letters to the Editor
The BJP's three-day national executive in Chennai answered many critical questions. While it was good that the party chief, L.K. Advani, chose the occasion to arraign the ways of the RSS, it is deplorable that it has taken so long for the BJP to realise that first and foremost, it is a political party. The stage now seems set for a grand finale, with a struggle expected to start in right earnest between the moderates and the hardcore elements in the party.
Following the Jinnah controversy, communication between the RSS and Mr. Advani broke down. Their relationship soured to such an extent that the RSS started looking forward to the announcement of Mr. Advani's departure as BJP chief. Now it is up to the other seasoned leader, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to decide what course the party should take.
Sai Pavan Anugula,
The BJP is what it is today not because of the RSS but because of leaders like Mr. Vajpayee and Mr. Advani. Together they are responsible for the growth of the party. The RSS, which has no political or mass base, would do well to realise this.
As a political party the BJP should derive its strength from the people and should be answerable only to them. The party cannot overtly or covertly dance to the tunes of the RSS or any other organisation.
Mahendra Sethia,
