Musharraf vs. women

This refers to the report "Musharraf in row with women rights activists" (Sept. 19) on the Pakistan President's belligerent reaction to criticism by some rights activists in New York of his alleged remark in an interview to the Washington Post that women in Pakistan exploit rape to get visas.

His claim that he was misquoted does not seem to have assuaged the feelings of women, a fact that was evident during the showdown on Saturday. General Musharraf, instead of lecturing to the world, should apologise to Pakistan's women and change the laws that are heavily loaded against them.

Vipul Thakore,
