CHENNAI: No one will accuse you of whiling away your time at this `adda,' the Bengali term for informal, passionate discussion. Not when you are in the company of a group of more than 22 eminent artists from all over the country. The Taj Group's `Art Adda,' presented in association with The Hindu MetroPlus and ABN AMRO, brings these artists on a single platform for an entire week, during which they will paint canvases for art lovers. The public will have an opportunity to watch the creative process, which will take place at the Taj Coromandel and the Taj Connemara until October 30. The paintings will be sold at an art auction held that evening and the proceeds will go to charity. Inaugurating the `Art Adda', N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu , said art camps brought people together in two ways. "First, they bring artists together under one roof; they provide an opportunity for them to interact and discuss ideas and techniques with each other. Secondly, and equally importantly, they allow the public to see how artists create their works. This helps to demystify the process of creation ... [and] enables the lay public to understand and appreciate works of art better." Stating that the `adda' was a wonderful tradition and cultural institution "marked by informality as well as great earnestness," he said Chennai rarely had the opportunity to see such a gifted array of artists in one camp. Among the artists who will be at work over the next few days are Dhiraj Choudhury, Prakash Karmakar, Sudip Roy, Shuvaprassana, Amitabh Sengupta, Suryaprakash, P. Gopinath and K. Muralidharan. The event has been organised with the help of Sarala's Art Centre-Artworld, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
