CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy and Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu have demanded a probe by a sitting Supreme Court Judge into the report "that the erstwhile Soviet agency KGB funded Congress and Communist Party leaders."

Addressing a public meeting organised by the state unit of the BJP here on Thursday, Dr. Swamy said it was a cognizable offence and that the book on KGB had provided prima facie evidence. He alleged that the KGB had infiltrated into various layers of official and party hierarchy. It was unfortunate that due to infiltration by the KGB, the country's policies had been changed in the past. If the Congress party felt that the reports were "mischievous," why was it afraid to order an enquiry, he asked. He wanted the BJP to raise the issue in the coming session of Parliament.

Mr. Naidu said it was a "serious and sensitive" issue, which could not dismissed as an attempt to malign the country. The revelations were "shocking" and bound to make India hang in shame. It was a challenge to the country's sovereignty and integrity. The Centre owed an explanation to the people, he said.

He said that both A.B. Vajpayee and L.K. Advani had written a joint letter to the Government, seeking a probe. But the government had not responded so far. Hence the BJP was organising public meetings from September 25 to October 2 to pressure the government for a probe, he said.

BJP State president C.P. Radhakrishnan said the report had brought down the country's image in the international arena.
