Court clears civic chief's election

HYDERABAD: The High Court on Thursday permitted the officers to declare the result of the election held to the post of Dharmavaram Municipal Council Chairperson, Anantapur district. The court however restrained the authorities from conducting elections for the post of Vice- Chairperson.

Justice B. Seshasayana Reddy was modifying the interim orders in the writ petition filed by Venkata Narayana, the councillor from the Telugu Desam Party. It may be recalled that the writ petition was filed challenging the action of the authorities in permitting the Member of Parliament from Hindupur to exercise his option of voting in the meetings of Municipal Council, Dharmavaram.

The petitioner contended that Nizamuddin, the present MP, exercised his option to vote in Hindupur Municipal Council on an earlier occasion and he cannot change his option now. He sought a direction to the effect that the vote of the MP will not be taken into account when voting for the Chairperson post takes place. A single Judge passed interim orders last week making it clear that the vote of the MP will not be considered and if the election has already taken place, the election result shall not be announced. Justice Seshasayana Reddy directed the authorities to declare the result and made it clear that the result is subject to final judgement .
