HYDERABAD: The State committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions has demanded a judicial probe into the Tuesday's accident at Gulf Oil Corporation, Kukatpally, which claimed the life of a worker and left three others injured. CITU general secretary S. Veerayya in a release on Thursday said that the Gulf Oil Corporation was becoming prone to accidents. The whereabouts of a worker involved in an accident in the company two years ago was still not known.
Stern action urged
Frequent accidents were the result of employing contract workers even in important and key positions made possible under the regime of liberalised economy. The mechanism for supervising safety and precautionary measures was rendered totally useless in many industries as a result, he observed. Demanding stern action against those responsible for the accident, he appealed to the Government to come to the rescue of the Gulf Oil Corporation victims' families. The CITU also decried the remarks of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy during Safar programme that number of accidents in the State was increasing due to drivers.
Dig at State
The Government conveniently ignored bad condition of vehicles, over worked drivers, lack of minimum wages that were major contributors for growing number of accidents besides use of cell phones by vehicle drivers while driving, he pointed out.
