KHAMMAM: The tri-colour is unfurled by people of Garla on the day of Vijayadasami too. It has been the tradition for over five decades in the town. The occasion is as important as Independence Day or Republic Day. And hence, Islavath Kanti, sarpanch of Garla Gram Panchayat, hoisted the national flag in `Janda Bazar' on Wednesday. Panchayat officials and elite of the village were among those who took part in the procession organised to mark the occasion.
During Nizam rule
The flag hoisting on the special day has its own significance. When Garla zagir was under the Nizam's rule, the zagirdar emerged all-powerful. He had his say in every matter. All powers pertaining to public administration rested with him. He could do anything except minting currency. A blue flag was hoisted on the day of Vijayadasami by Muslim rulers. They used to perform `Jammipuja' on the occasion, thus demonstrating the urge for religious harmony. It turned out to be a popular festival and the people participated in a big way irrespective of their faiths. As the Nizam rule came to an end, the blue flag was replaced by the national flag.
