International cooperation in shrimp management stressed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The need for international cooperation in shrimp management was stressed by speakers at a training workshop on `Application of PCR for improved shrimp health management in the Asian region' here on Monday.

They said during the past decade, diseases had affected the profitability of shrimp culture. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening of seed prior to stocking could reduce the risk of crop failure.

Though it was being done, diseases continued to impact production owing to variations in reliability of screening compounded by on-farm factors that might result even when the seed was properly screened.

Peter Walker of the CSIRO, who presided over the inaugural function, highlighted the need for international cooperation in shrimp health management.

The five-day workshop, being conducted by experts from India, Australia, and Thailand, will train participants in PCR diagnostics.

A detailed planning for voluntary ring testing exercise will be developed at the workshop in consultation with project partners and laboratories providing PCR service.
