CHENNAI: The Women Movement Against Power and Violence Tamil Nadu organised a human chain near Valluvar Kottam on Monday to mark the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Focus on poverty

The movement, which groups together unorganised workers, Janodhayam and Siga Community Service Guild, was seeking to draw attention to the issues of poverty, including the need for skills development, protected markets and integrating traditional pulses into the National Nutrition Policy.

A press release issued by the movement condemned the government's negotiations on an agreement on trade in services that requires privatisation of essential services.

Tax reductions sought

It demanded that undue incentives not be given to foreign capital, and ensure small, tiny and cottage industries be given tax reductions and general nutrition is protected by fostering multi-faceted agriculture.

The United Nations has set Millennium Development Goals that aim to reduce poverty by half by 2015.

The theme for this year is `Achieving the Millennium Development Goals-Empowering the Poorest of the Poor.' India currently ranks 127 on the United Nation Development Project's Human Development Index and 103 on the Gender Development Index out of 144.
