HYDERABAD: An alleged bootlegger was hacked to death in broad daylight by his rivals at Chatrinaka on Tuesday. The killing led to escalation of tension as the victim's relatives and friends attacked a wine shop owned by one of the assailants. The police said victim D. Shankar, 30, was passing by a wine shop on a motorcycle around 10.30 a.m. when shop owner Raju his brother Pavan and workers -- Arun and Shobha Raju -- allegedly waylaid and attacked him with an axe and sticks killing him on the spot. Raju and Pavan later surrendered before the police. "We learnt that Raju and Shankar had business rivalry and their differences deepened recently when the latter planned to open another wine shop in the same area," Sub-Inspector Y. Venkateswara Rao said. On learning about the murder, Shankar's supporters gathered in front of the shop and resorted to stone-pelting. They also beat up the parents of the one of the shop workers. Police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse angry crowds.
