NEW DELHI: Ford Motor Company on Tuesday unveiled its new car "Fiesta" in the premium mid-size segment, specifically made for the Indian market. Developed by Ford's global engineering team in cooperation with a core team of Indian engineers, the car will be available in petrol and diesel versions from mid-November. However, the company did not divulge the price of the car. Launching the car, Ford Chairman and CEO Bill Ford said India was an important market for the company. "We are committed to make major long term investments in India," he said, refusing to give details of the proposed investments that will be mainly in manufacturing and research and development facilities. "In our efforts to meet the global challenges, we plan to optimise our investments in high growth areas; and India is at the top of that list," he asserted. Mr. Ford, who is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha besides visiting Ford's plant near Chennai during his India visit, said both India and China were important markets for them. Ford India Managing Director Arvind Mathew said Fiesta would be available in two variants the Duratec petrol 1.6 litre and the Duratec 1.4 litre TDCi (turbo direct common rail injection) diesel. Hoping that the new car would further boost the company's sales in India, Mr. Mathew said: "The petrol engine and the gearbox will be locally produced, while the turbo diesel enginewill be imported from Europe initially." Announcing that there were no immediate plans to export Fiesta, Mr. Mathew said it was a significant milestone for the company.
