`Dissuade ryots from raising groundnut'

Staff Reporter

Lack of timely rain affects crop

  • Call for rythu sadassus to enlighten farmers
  • `Encourage castor, Bengal gram cultivation'
  • No guaranteed power for rabi season

KADAPA: Farmers raised groundnut crop in 1.80 lakh hectares in Kadapa district this year, as against the normal 1.30 lakh hectares and were facing hardships on account of poor crop yield, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Wednesday.

Lack of timely rainfall adversely affected groundnut crop and farmers must be motivated to take up other crops, as they were incurring losses by taking up groundnut cultivation year after year, he said at a meeting here. Ryots should be enlightened to change cropping pattern in rythu sadassus commencing on November 2, he said. He asked officials to ensure participation of 3,000 to 4,000 farmers in rythu sadassus.

He asked them to motivate farmers to raise castor, Bengal gram etc. Farmers of Adilabad district raised soya bean in 1,000 acres in 1995 and were growing the crop in 1.56 lakh acres this year, he said. Mr. Kumar exhorted farmers not to raise paddy in rabi season, as Transco officials were not guaranteeing power supply for rabi crops. He directed mandal-level official meetings on October 29 to discuss arrangements for rythu sadassus. Progress of works under SGRY, housing, Velugu, Cool and Cute, and AIDS prevention should also be monitored, he said.

The Collector pulled up MROs for delay in computerizing data pertaining to land and pattadar passbooks. Recalling complaints that developmental programmes did not progress on schedule, he wanted weekly review on Saturdays. Taking objection to absence of Kondapuram MRO in revenue sadassu, he threatened action against negligent officials.
